Dr. Dave Flippo is a native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania who has lived and worked in Chicago as a composer, pianist, bandleader and teacher since 1987. Mr. Flippo holds a Doctorate of Musical Arts in Music Composition from the University of Michigan and a Masters in the same from The Eastman School of Music. His minors include history, conducting, piano and ethnic music. His B. A was received from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He currently teaches at Triton College, College of Lake County and his own studios- Dr. Flippo's Eclectic Jazz Studios. He performs regularly the 1st and 3rd Sunday at Tommy Nevins' Pub with his quartet-Jazz From Planet Flippo and as a solos pianist at Chicago area Mariano's Markets. Other recent venues include Chicago's Langham Hotel (solo) and Eddie V's Prime Seafood (trio.)
After his move to Chicago, Mr. Flippo formed "Flippomusic Globaljazz" (later just "Flippomusic") which specialized in performing his world-fusion originals. This period of the band resulted with two CD's with Southport Records - Tendrils of Light (1995) and Gansh (2001). A new phase began with his emergence as a vocalist which resulted in the ensemble's third CD, When the Heart is Strong (2004), a disk that blends originals with standards and a few contemporary works, both with his own Oppilf Records label.
A fourth CD, Tao Tunes (2012), also features Flippo on vocals and was a very personal project on a text that is very important for him. It is a collection of original musical settings of the ancient Chinese text, the Tao Te Ching. This disk covers a wide range of styles including jazz, Latin, ballad, ambient, world (Indian counterpoint) and rock.
Their most recent release, Life on Mars-"Jazzified" Rock Classics (2016) has received airplay all over the world and a very enthusiastic response. This CD is an instrumental piano trio album and features Flippo as an arranger. Included are tunes by David Bowie, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Stevie Wonder and Lennon/McCartney as well as several jazz standards.
Dr. Flippo also performed, toured and recorded with "Pong Unit" for five years with Slam Poet originator Marc Smith at the Green Mill in Chicago.
Mr. Flippo's past instructor include (piano) Nicolo Sartori (a student of Michelangeli) and Rebecca Pennys; (composition) Daniel Perlong, Warren Benson, Robert Morris, Leslie Bassett, William Bolcolm, George B. Wilson; (jazz) Alan Swain; (arranging) Sydney Hodgkinson and Cliff Colnot.
Flippomusic has performed throughout the Chicago area for over 25 years in numerous colleges, festivals, clubs and libraries.
- Dan Hesler- Saxophones and flute. In addition to working a full time job as a Federal Defender, Dan performs with various jazz ensembles and jobbing bands. Some of the bands he’s played in include Suenos, Digression Mode, Kathy Kelly Ensemble, Sons of the Never Wrong, Motha, Cerqua Rivera Dance Theatre.
- Heath Chappell – Drum set. Also performs and records with Suenos, The New Invaders, Al Rose, Barry Sperti's Caravan, Cantique, John Moran Trio, Mark Smith's Pong Unit, Midway Ramblers Cajun Band, Mothra and the "Famous Pizza Gig Ensemble" at Bacino's. He revieved his Bachelors of Music from the University of Miami.
- Donn De Santo – Acoustic and electric bass. He teaches string bass at Chicago State University and has a Bachelors Degree in jazz studies from DePaul University. Donn has performed with Event Horizon Jazz Ensemble, John Moran Trio, Brass Tracks Big Band, Pete Ellman, Bill O’Connell Big Band and Cantique.
