FLIPPOMUSIC! is comprised of some of Chicago's most versatile musicians, who
effortlessly move from swing to funk to Latin (and even Asian and African). Constantly
challenged by the diverse pieces Dave Flippo asks them to perform, these players delight
in this kind of fluidity. The band offeres TWO very unique programs:
1. JAZZ NOW! presents an exciting mix of Flippo originals
and "jazzified" vocal arrangement of modern classics \
by artists such as Lenon/McCartney, Sting, Joni Mitchell, Stevie Wonder, the Flaming Lips
and other contemporary artists. The band performs music from their newest CD, "Tao
Tunes," mixing both vocal and instrumental arranements to create a fresh program with
something for everyone.
While the groups's standard size is a quartet, it can lso appear as a trio or duo.
2. GLOBALJAZZ! - FLIPPOMUSIC! takes the audience on a musical trip
around the world, mixing traditional melodies with original "globaljazz"
pieces from their two CD's on Southport Records. The band visits every continent (except Antartica),
performing music that blends jazz with musical styles from Asia, Africa, Latin and Central America, Eastern
and Western Europe, the Middle East and India. Howard Reich of the Chicago Tribune describes the band:
"One of the most unusual and appealing bands to spring up in Chicago of late, Flippomusic Globaljazz
speaks a language of its own making--and a beguiling language it is. Part Arabic melody, part Asian harmony,
part American jazz( and so on ), the band creates a sound, a texture and a brand as exotic as it is original."
This band performs as a quintet, but can appear as a quartet.
