BLUE ELEVEN-DAVE FLIPPO-       Saxophonist/Flutist Dan Hesler came into a rehearsal singing
a rhythm "in eleven." Takadimi, tackita, taka, taka, and wanted to jam on it. I ended writing
two tunes for the band to play. Bassist Donn De Santo and drummer Heath Chappel really

gave it a kind of funk feel that felt like we were jammin' in the garage again...

TUMBLIN UP-DAVE FLIPPO-       This tune was inspired by the feel on Pat Metheny's
"Phase Dance."  This is a great example of every just grooving along in the pocket together.
That's where Donn and Heath lock in an build the foundation the others play above.

BLACK HOLE SUN-CHRIS CORNELL - This arrangement had a nice form, starting with piano
and then introducing Dan on the bridge on sax. The wierd 5-4 bass line from the
original gave Heath a new challenge for creating a solo-which he nailed... very quirky... One final addition to the tune was Dan's decision to scream through his horn in the closing bridge... Crazy, man...

ELEVENTH HEAVEN-DAVE FLIPPO - The second piece based on Dan's request to play "in eleven."
Donn is featured on this weaving in and out around the melody with some fun licks.
Dan and I (on melodica) figured out how to make those steady eighth sections in the bridge
keep their flow.

EVERYDAY PEOPLE-SLY STONE - One of two covers in this recording project. We have lots of fun
with this Latin groove. Donn came up with the idea of dropping down and crescendoing
at near the end on the "we gotta live togethers." Really works...

DANKE BACH - DAVE FLIPPO - This is as close to a "major work" that I get in this jazz
ensemble setting -  a more through-composed piece with three sections of music mixed
with solos.  This was a tricky piece to pull together, and one that we all felt great
finally nailing. A great group effort.

PURSUIT OF THER UNIMAGINABLE-- DAVE FLIPPO-Donn thought a solo piano intro would
be a good choice with this piece, and it worked on nicely.  Heath always creates beautiful
atmospheric textures and sounds on ballads with great cymbal work.

SPIN CONTROL- DAVE FLIPPO - This piece is more of a be-bopish tune that's very angular withsome tricky rhythms. We tried various tempos on this one and settled in on the one
on this cut

JULIAN- DAVE FLIPPO - This is a kind of jazz two-part invention written for my grandson.
Dan had the idea of doing a two part contrapuntal solo with Donn after my piano solo, which
really tied in nicely with the whole general texture of the piece.

ELEVEN-WAY INTERSECTION - DAVE FLIPPO - This is a very old piece from the 1990 I pulled
back out, since we were messing around with the meter of eleven.  Heath and Donn
once again nail the grove and hold the piece together while Dan and I go somewhat wild.

00:00 / 06:58

COOL FRONT - DAVE FLIPPO - This piece was written as a medium bossa nova, but for some
reason when we began to practice it, we tried a breakneck tempo that didn't work very
well. When we realized it was medium bossa, it really settled in. Heath had the idea of
playing the repeated phrase at the end much slower, which really worked well.
