"FOUR CHEFS"
- by Planet Flippo

Music invented, performed
and
recorded in
Illinois.

Our newest recording project, "Four Chefs," demonstrates how much the members of Planet Flippo love collaborating and building new music together.

Feel free to listen to each of our recordings and learn a bit about the different contributions each player made in the rehearsing and recording process.

This program is partially supported by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council.

BLUE ELEVEN  by Dave Flippo:  Dan Hesler (sax/flute) came into a rehearsal singing a rhythm in 11: "Takadimi, tackita, taka, taka."  That request inspired me to write two tunes for the band to play. Donn De Santo (bass) and Heath Chappell (drums) really gave it a kind of funk feel.  The piece takes us back to the days when we used to jam in the garage.

TUMBLIN UP  by Dave Flippo: This tune was inspired by the feel on Pat Metheny's
"Phase Dance."  This is a great example of just grooving along in the pocket together.
Donn (bass) and Heath (drums) lock in and build the foundation the others play above.

ELEVENTH HEAVEN  by Dave Flippo: This is the second piece based on Dan's (sax/flute) request to play "in eleven."  Donn is featured on bass in this piece, weaving in and out around the melody with some fun, flowing licks. Dan  figured out how to make the
steady eighths in the bridge continuously flow using staggered breathing in our parts.

DANKE BACH  by Dave Flippo: This is as close to a "major work" that I get in this jazz
quartet setting - a more through-composed piece with three sections of music mixed
with solos.  This was a tricky piece to pull together, but we we're all really pleased when

we nailed it. - a great group effort.  While mixing the final result Donn considered how
to help this piece feel like an homage to Bach. He came up with the awesome idea of
using a cathedral reverb on it which really pulled the whole sound together.

PURSUIT OF THER UNIMAGINABLE  by Dave Flippo: Donn (bass) thought a solo piano intro would be a good choice with this piece, and it worked out nicely.  Heath (drums)  always creates beautiful atmospheric textures and sounds on ballads with great cymbal work.

SPIN CONTROL  by Dave Flippo: This piece is more of a be-bopish tune that's very angular with some tricky rhythms. We experimented with various tempos on this one and settled in on the one used on this cut

JULIAN  by Dave Flippo: This is a kind of jazz two-part invention written for my grandson.
Dan (sax/flute) suggested doing a two part contrapuntal solo with Donn (bass)  after my piano solo, which really tied in nicely with the  general concept of the piece.

ELEVEN-WAY INTERSECTION  by Dave Flippo: I wrote this piece in 1990, but pulled it back out, since we were messing with the number eleven and had never recorded it. Heath (drums) and Donn (bass) once again nailed the groove and held the piece together while Dan (sax) and I (keys) went somewhat wild.

COOL FRONT  by Dave Flippo: This piece was written as a medium bossa nova, but for some reason when we began to practice it, we tried a breakneck tempo that didn't work very
well. When we realized it should be a medium bossa, it really settled in. Heath (drums) had the idea of repeating the last  phrase much slower to end the piece, which worked great!

STRETCHIN' IT  by Dave Flippo: Another "bebopish" kinda tune with some challenging
rhythms and crazy leaping lines. This is one of our crazier tunes that we all got a kick
out of playing.
